Webhosting services security systems: how are you protected?
When you are choosing a company to host your website there are a lot of things that you are going to have to consider. One of the most important is the security that they offer. Security is not an area where you want to cheap out; you need to make sure that you are getting good service. It is important to know what security systems your web hosting company should be offering you.
The first security system that web hosts provide is called secure file transfer protocol or SFTP. This is an upgraded version of the standard file transfer protocol that is used by most web hosts to allow you to add content to your site. The reason for the upgrade is that standard FTP is not completely secure and people can access the files you are trying to transfer. Even worse they can actually alter the information that is in the files. SFTP encrypts the files so that people are not able to access or alter them.
The next type of security system that you should get from your webhost is secure sockets layer or SSL. You have likely come across this term before since virtually all ecommerce sites include this feature. This is designed to protect your private information. It is not a good idea to provide any personal information to a site that does not have an SSL certificate. If you are running a site that is making sales you need to have this or very few people will buy from you, make sure that your webhost provides you with an SSL certificate.
Another important security feature that you are going to want to make sure of when you are choosing a web host is that they provide data backup. It is bad enough if your site goes down, it is even worse if you lose all of the information on your site. Good webhosts will provide a back up of all the data so this is something that you are going to want to check for. If the data is backed up it is still a hassle to get your site back up but nowhere near as much of a hassle as it is if you have to start over again from the beginning.
One thing to keep in mind about web hosts and security is that there is a constant need to upgrade it. Technology is always improving which means that there are also always new threats to your site. You want to make sure that you go with a host that is committed to making sure that they keep their security up to date. This is something that you are probably not going to get from the companies that offer really cheap hosting; you are going to have to pay for quality.
