What is webhosting?
If you have a website or ever thought about building one you are probably familiar with web hosting. This is something that you will need to have if you have a site. There are a few different options when it comes to web hosting so you will need to decide which is best for you. In large part this will depend on the size and type of your site.
A web host is simply a computer called a server that is hooked up to the internet twenty four hours a day seven days a week. When you build a website you would upload it to the server where it is made available for anybody who is looking for it. Clearly if you are going to have a website you are going to have to have web host. Fortunately there are hundreds of companies that offer this service you will have no trouble finding a place to host your site. The challenge is in making sure that you choose the right one.
If you want to host a website you basically have three options the first is a free web host. This is a company that will host your site for no charge. They are willing to do this because they will put ads on your site in order to make money. While free web hosting may be alright for a personal site if you are running an online business you are not going to want to have somebody else's ads on your site. Free web hosts are also not the most reliable option so that may be an issue as well.
The second option that you have is shared web hosting. This is how most people get their hosting. This works by allowing several people to host their sites on the same server. Since the costs are shared it is quite inexpensive to host your site, rarely over ten dollars a month. The downside to shared hosting is that it does not give you a lot of room to upgrade if you need to expand your site. That being said for the vast majority of websites this will never become an issue that they have to worry about.
The last option that you have for web hosting is a dedicated server. This is a where your site is hosted on its own server. This is a fairly expensive option and is really only necessary for large sites. Being on your own server means that you have complete control and that you don't have to worry about what other people do. Most sites will never get big enough that they would need their own server but it is something that you should know about. In some cases smaller sites may be hosted on a dedicated server because they offer better security than shared hosting does.
